PCMA (Professional Convention Management Association) has announced it is to work with visit.brussels to enhance the education programme of the sixth European Association Summit (EAS), taking place in Brussels on 8-9 March 2018. Utilising its senior level education expertise, PCMA supports visit.brussels in the development of the event’s educational elements, as well as provide speaker and moderator support, while visit.brussels leads the strategy, communications, structure and format of the event.
The Meetings Industry Association (mia) hosted its first Destinations Summit on 5 and 6 February, held at the Old Ship Hotel in Brighton. Organised by the mia’s Destinations Group chair Paul Szomoru, head of business events at NewcastleGateshead Convention Bureau, the two-day event saw representatives from 20 UK destinations coming together to discuss how to attract more international events and run successful convention bureaux.

Throughout December 2017 IET Venues’, three UK sites in London, Birmingham and Glasgow came together with prospective clients to donate boxes of LEGO® toys to several UK children’s charities, exclusively gifted for every site visit hosted during the month. The three-week charitable drive saw IET Venues donate a total of 86 sets of LEGO® to children’s causes, including 68 given to Star Chase Children’s Hospice; 10 to Starlight Children’s Foundation; and 8 to NHS Greater Glasgow and Clyde Royal Hospital for Children. The 86 site visits raised £860, with contributions raised from tours of IET London: Savoy Place, IET Birmingham: Austin Court and the IET Glasgow: Teacher Building.
VisitBritain/VisitEngland research details travel and spending behaviour of Business Events delegates
Business delegates are likely to double their spend in Britain if they extend their stay for leisure following their event, according to new research by tourism agency VisitBritain/VisitEngland. The Business Events Research; Delegate Spend and Trip Extensions report, published today (30 January), provides detailed research into business events delegates’ spending and travel behaviours.
The East of England Arena and Events Centre has announced that Monsoon, the Asian event management specialist, is to market, manage and deliver all Asian events at the venue, coordinating events with the venue's core business of exhibitions, festivals and conferences. Monsoon joins its partner Amadeus in delivering services to the East of England Arena, and has a tested business model ready to activate on the venue's behalf, as Monsoon's managing director, Pav Shergill, explained, “We've worked with Amadeus and NEC Group for four years, providing our events management experience, cultural insight and supplier knowledge to make alternative venues accessible to South Asian Events.”
The ICC has secured a deal with the UK & Ireland SAP User Group that will bring its annual conference – UKISUG Connect – to the Birmingham based venue for 2019, 2020 and 2021. The three-day event for 900 attendees utilises the entire venue to facilitate networking, knowledge exchange and best practice amongst its members, culminating in SUGFest which gives delegates an evening of informal networking, great food and fantastic entertainment.

The newly AIM Gold awarded Cloth Hall Court by Well Met will welcome around 300 delegates tomorrow, Friday 26 January, for the very first dedicated conference designed for cyber security experts. The BSides conference has been organised by students from Leeds Beckett University’s School of Computing, Creative Technologies and Engineering, along with the university’s Ethical Hacking Society.
VisitScotland has unveiled its latest ‘year of’ campaign for 2018, the Year of Young People (YOYP). The campaign will showcase a programme of events, activities and ideas that will give young people in Scotland a higher profile. Led by the Scottish Government, the Year of Young People aims to inspire Scotland through its younger generation (aged 8 – 26) and give them a chance to express their views and celebrate their achievements. It will also give VisitScotland Business Events a chance to shine a light on the country’s business tourism industry and the careers and opportunities available within this sector.
The Lakeside Conference Centre, based just outside York, predicts a strong 2018 following a 10 per cent increase in bookings over the last 12 months. The conference centre welcomed more than 3,500 delegates during 2017 with over half of all bookings made up of repeat business. New business to the site included events for the RSPCA, Kerry Foods and Imperial College London.
