However, early data from Skiddle.com – which boasts the largest nation-wide New Year’s Eve What’s on Guide – indicates increased buoyancy in the sector.

As a primary ticket outlet focusing on small through to large events, and with comfortably the UK’s largest New Year’s Eve What’s on listings, Skiddle.com is ideally positioned to ascertain the overall performance of New Year’s Eve ticket sales across the nation.

In the run up to New Year’s Eve, industry pundits had predicted low ticket sales and a general decline in New Year’s Eve door revenues for the first time in years, blaming the predicted shrinkage on the recessions of the past couple of years, government spending cuts and stagnant salaries.

Indeed, many early reports from the retail sector seemed to back up the pundits’ concerns about New Year’s Eve, with trends indicating Christmas sales were slow at best, with many consumers opting for an austerity Christmas in 2012.

When discussing New Year’s Eve, these fears were also voiced by many of the UK’s event promoters, who had expected smaller turnouts on the most celebrated night of the year. Fears which were seemingly reflected in lower average ticket face value than previous years.

Skiddle Director, Richard Dyer said: “We’ve been telling the industry since early November that this year would be a growth year for New Year’s Eve rather than a slump, the signs have clearly been there with search volumes for New Year’s Eve related events starting earlier than ever and with greater volume.”

Continuing, Dyer said: “We do live in austere times, money is tight and there is a lot of doom and gloom in the country. But that’s exactly why people came out in force on New Year’s Eve; they wanted to have a good time on the last night of the year. It’s an opportunity for the nation to breathe a collective sigh of relief and welcome in a new year.”

Skiddle’s New Year’s Eve listings featured thousands of events, from throughout the UK. The cities with the most New Year’s Eve event goers included London, Manchester, Liverpool, Leeds, Birmingham, Sheffield, Edinburgh, Newcastle and Glasgow, with most cities in the UK showing a significant increase in New Year’s Eve ticket sales
