AN Olympic events village could operate in Weymouth during 2011 as well as 2012.

The idea was suggested by Councillor Roger Allen whose Weymouth and Portland management committee colleagues agreed to consider it after approving the principle of  developing an events village on the Pavilion peninsula.

Special projects spokesman Councillor Howard Legg said the area was perfectly suited to an events village and he supported the idea of getting an experienced event management company to deliver the project which the meeting agreed to.

Vice-chairman Councillor Mike Goodman said: “We have to get on with this and it is something which needs to be progressed with the advice of an appropriate event management company.”

Members then agreed to Mr Allen’s suggestion of having an events village not just in 2012 but in 2011 as well while bearing in mind the impact of lost revenue from staging the village on the Pavilion car park.

A report to the meeting detailed potential uses, attractions and activities which included marquees, music, artists, street theatre and other enterainment, food and drink, cultural Olympiad events, a viewing balloon-Weymouth Eye and a variety of natural exhibitions from the likes of the Natural History Museum and Jurassic Coast.

The meeting then voted to tender for an events management company with the option of an events village in 2011 as well as 2012.
