Festival organiser lands key role for London 2012 Olympics

Dr Eleni TheodorakiAN EXPERT in events management has been given a key role in helping to ensure the smooth running of the London 2012 Olympics.

Dr Eleni Theodoraki, director of the Edinburgh Institute for Festival and Event Management at Edinburgh Napier’s Business School, has been appointed as core commissioner for a sustainable London 2012.

She will work with the Olympic Delivery Authority , the London Organising Committee of the Olympic Games and Paralympic Games, the Greater London Authority and the UK Government.

The goal is to make the most of the long-term social, economic and environmental benefits that come from hosting such a major sporting and cultural event.

Dr Theodoraki said: “Hosting the Olympic Games in London presents a once in a lifetime opportunity to pursue significant urban, social and sport development challenges in Britain.

“With the volume of investment currently estimated at £9 billion, it is fundamental that sustainability objectives are taken account of within all the planning and development.

“As core commissioner for a sustainable London 2012 Olympic Games I intend to help planners and organisers recognise opportunities for sustainable growth.”
