Brigg Firework Display 2009 cancelled
A shortage of volunteers, coupled with strict council health and safety rules have forced the cancellation of a popular North Lincolnshire firework display.
The Brigg Firework Display was due to be held at Brigg Recreation Ground this Saturday but had to be pulled by the Brigg Roundtable who had been organising the event.
Robert Sommerville, event organiser, said: “Obviously we’re very disappointed to have to cancel, but the sad reality is it’s getting harder to stage such events when there are a lack of volunteers and health and safety requirements which need to be met.
To be approved by North Lincolnshire Council, public events must have an event organiser, a safety manager, a chief steward and an appropriate number of additional stewards for the scale of the event.
Organisers must also have carried out a full risk assessment including fire safety, and working at heights, and have made designated first aid arrangements.
James Truepenny, Brigg town mayor, said: “These community events are the lifeblood of Brigg and we just have to hope this isn’t a sign of things to come, we would be more than happy to help stage next year’s event as it’s crucial we don’t let them disappear.”
At the time of writing North Lincolnshire Council were unavailable for comment.
