Festival of Lights returns to Brent

Brent Council and the local community are joining forces again for the amazing spectacle of Brent Diwali, the Festival of Lights, on Saturday 10th October 2009, 1-9pm.

Brent Diwali marks the start of the traditional New Year for the Hindu, Sikh and Jain communities. Attracting in excess of 35,000 people, it is one of the largest Diwali celebrations outside India. ‘Diwali’ literally translates to mean ‘row of lights’ and this festival incorporates the theme of light to treat audiences to one of the most visually stunning parades in the UK.

Celebrations begin in the early afternoon at the nearly-completed Shri Sanatan Hindu Mandiron on Ealing Road with performances by the very best of Brent’s Indian dance groups and an exhibition of beautiful Rangoli artworks. This will be the first opportunity for the public to get a close up view of the temple made of richly carved stone shipped from India.

At 6.30pm the Mayor of Brent, Jim O’ Sullivan will switch the Diwali lights on, illuminating Ealing Road. The magnificent parade, with beautifully lit floats, costumed dancers and musicians will then make its way through the streets. Hungry revellers will able to sample the delights of Ealing Road, home to the best Indian cuisine in London.

The parade will culminate at the award winning Barham Park with a fun fair and the audience will watch in awe as fireworks and laser shows light up the night sky.

Renowned Harlesden carnival arts company Mahogany (who also supply costumes for Notting Hill Carnival) will provide 80 incredible costumes. Magnificent floats and performers will be supplied by groups from the local Indian community.

Diwali, which attracts people from all faiths and backgrounds, is one of the most important celebrations for the Hindu, Sikh and Jain communities. The festival celebrates the triumph of light over darkness and good over evil.

Brent Diwali would not be possible without the support of principal sponsor, Lebara Mobile.
