Sustainability ‘an issue for the events industry’

Businesses in the events planning sector are taking sustainability into account, one expert has said.

Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) has led a number of firms to take the environmental impact of conferences and shows in to consideration.

Event venues have already taken a note of environmental issues and have waste management and recycling systems in place, Tom Treverton, director of the Association of Event Venues (AEV) said.

He explained: “Issues of sustainability became very important early on for venues because they were having to shift waste, deal with things like landfill tax, disposal, recycling, all things like that.”

Mr Treverton added that focusing on energy efficiency and waste management can help the events sector highlight such issues across a number of different industries.

Figures from startups.co.uk suggest that the average small business could save £7,000 by investing in energy efficiency. Turning off lights and computer screens each evening could cut a further 20 per cent of the average small company’s energy bills.

By planning and implementing your event sustainably, you can look after your triple bottom line.

The BS 8901 Specification for a sustainable event management system with guidance for use is the industry standard that venues and planner alike are adopting.

http://www.eventsustainability.co.uk is a tool that can help you plan your event sustainably and follows the BS 8901 framework – though it shouldn’t be used as substitute.
