Wales GB Rally organisers pull out of city and relocate to capital

The chequered flag has been waved for the Wales GB Rally in Swansea.

Event organisers have told Swansea Council they are pulling out of the city and relocating the centre to Cardiff instead.

Over the past few years the event has been worth millions of pounds to Swansea’s economy, thanks to the service centre that was set up at Felindre and subsequently SA1.

So the decision has been greeted with anger by many tourism businesses.

Tony McGetrick, chairman of Tourism Swansea Bay, which represents 200 local businesses in the area, said: “I think there will be a lot of surprise and shock and a lot of outrage at this decision.

“It’s very, very short notice. Businesses will have budgeted for the Wales Rally GB and banked on the Service Centre coming to Swansea.”

A study of the 2007 event showed almost 40 per cent of visitors attracted to the event were planning to stay overnight and visit pubs, shops and restaurants in Swansea.
