Oxjam Festival City gigs to help the poor

| March 4, 2009 | 0 Comments More

GIGS being played across Nottingham this month will help buy shelters and provide water in the world’s poor areas.

Artists are playing at venues across the city in the Oxjam Festival.

It is the fourth time the event has come to Nottingham and this year is expected to be bigger than ever. Local artists and some from further afield will be providing the entertainment at the pubs and clubs.

“There is going to be some really good entertainment on show,” said regional organiser Adam Pickering. “Hopefully, as many people as possible can come along and help us make money for a really good cause.”

People at some of the gigs will have to pay to get in, while others are free. Collections will be made at a number of them.

Proceeds will go to Oxfam, which works to combat poverty and suffering in poor parts of the world.

Mr Pickering said they were targeting raising more than £15,000 from events in the region.

The events kick off on Thursday, March 12 with hip-hop music from C2C and Pete Jordan at Dogma bar.

Top local promoters are getting involved in the events, including Detonate, which is presenting drum and bass act High Contrast on March 27.

Mr Pickering said he was also pleased to see other alternative forms of entertainment, including art sales and live illustrations on March 21.

The events finish with a singer-songwriter night at The Running Horse on March 29.

“It is great to get so many people on board this year,” added Mr Pickering.

“Many are performing free of charge, though some promoters are charging but will be donating around 10% to the charity.

“Every gig, DJ or busk will help us raise money to tackle poverty around the world, as well as making for a month of great entertainment for music fans.”

The first Oxjam in Nottingham was in 2006. Nationally, since then the festivals have raised more than £1m – enough to buy 31,000 emergency shelters, provide safe water for 1.3m people or buy 40,000 goats.
