Love Prestwich Festival will be ‘just what the area needs’
PLANS for Prestwich Festival are gathering pace, with exciting events announced and more supporters coming on board.
Organisers have also announced its name — the Love Prestwich Festival.
The event will kick-off with the Prestwich Clough fun day on May 17 and finish with a big bash at Prestwich Carnival on June 21.
The festival is taking place in a bid to bring more visitors into the town and give smaller businesses a boost during the credit crunch.
The first event to be announced is Prestwich’s first ever farmers’ market, to be held at the Longfield Centre on May 24.
There will be 40 stalls selling everything from fresh vegetables to locally produced apple juice.
Stallholders will pay a small fee, with proceeds going to charity.
It will be a bigger version of the Ramsbottom farmers’ market.
Among the supporters backing the festival are Jo Haydock and Strat Barratt, who have agreed to include their May and June Shangri La! variety shows in the programme of events. Strat said: “It is a brilliant idea — just what Prestwich needs.”
Organiser Carran O’Grady has had interest from Prestwich and Philips high schools.
Now, she is hoping other organisations will find out more about the festival by attending a meeting at Prestwich Arts College at 7pm tonight. She said: “The early support we have had is fantastic. The schools have shown enthusiasm and drama groups also want to take part.
“There are just over two months to go and we are in a strong position at this stage.
“However, we need as much help as possible to get the best result.”
