Calls to back new festival

Businesses and residents are being called on to back the new Cotswold Festival.

A celebration of life, crafts and history will be held in Stow-on-the-Wold on September 26 and 27.

Organiser Brian Honess hopes to unite the community and bring in visitors to boost trade.

The Square will be closed off to host craft stalls, a farmers’ market and street entertainers.

And the Sealed Knot, dressed in Royalist and Roundhead uniforms, will commemorate the last battle of the Civil War, which was fought in Stow.

On the Friday before the weekend, it is hoped to have an antiques day, followed by an evening concert in St Edward’s Church.

Mr Honess said: “I hope shops and businesses will have their own stalls and the pubs and hotels will enter into the spirit of the event.

“Lots of town organisations have already confirmed their support and participation.

“We hope to make the weekend one to remember.

“We’d love stallholders and visitors to dress up in costume and bring a real air of the 1600s to the town.

“There’s going to be additional attractions – such as a horticultural show and Stow primary school will be involved in the festivities – so there will be something for everyone.”

A calendar competition is being run and photographers are urged to take pictures to illustrate Stow or aspects of Cotswold life or history.

The event will be a tribute to late Stow town councillor Colin Brand and could become an annual tradition.

Mr Brand was a stalwart community events organiser, spearheading his last celebration the Stow Royal Charter 900th anniversary in 2007.

Some of that event’s profits are being ploughed into the Cotswold Festival.
