Olympics legacy ‘boost for Lincolnshire’
The legacy of the Olympics in Lincolnshire will stretch beyond the 2012 Games, project organisers claim.
Cultural events that could help regenerate east coast towns and bring Olympic fever to the county are currently being planned.
An initial cash boost of £150,000 from organisations, including the East Midlands Development Agency, could be made available to develop between six and eight major projects celebrating the Games.
Existing community events in the county will also feature an Olympic theme when the 2012 date gets closer.
The plans being developed by the Lincolnshire Cultural Olympiad aim to fit with the initial London 2012 brief to create an accessible event that involves the whole of the UK.
And Cultural Olympiad organiser James Brindle said people would benefit in the long-term if they volunteered to help run the events.
“We should try to get all our residents in the county involved as much as possible,” he said.
“Not only as volunteers at the Olympic Games in London but also with cultural and sport activities in Lincolnshire, even beyond 2012.”
Sports facilities around the UK are also promoting themselves as potential training camp sites for visiting athletes.
Lincolnshire has five on the list including equestrian facilities offered at the University of Lincoln’s Riseholme Campus.
