Beverley, East Yorkshire, folk festival to play on

TICKETS have already gone on sale for the 2009 Beverley and East Riding Folk Festival, which is going ahead despite fears that last year’s event – the 25th – could have been the last.

Organisers had warned the future of the festival could be in jeopardy unless they could plug a funding gap.

They were considering possible changes to the event, including moving it out of Beverley. But the 2009 festival will again be based at Beverley Leisure Complex over the weekend June 19 to 21.

Billy Bragg has been confirmed as one of the headline acts, along with the Peat Bog Faeries.

Festival director Chris Wade said the event is still struggling to recoup its losses of previous years and to obtain funding to break even.

But she said the public had shown a big demand for it to stay in Beverley and it is hoped to expand the green field element with extra facilities in the camp site at the leisure venue.

“We are trying to involve local people a lot more in all the events. We will have to be much more careful with the budget, but we will still have strong headline acts and perhaps more local artists as well,” she said.
