ORGANISERS of this year’s inaugural ‘green’ Isle of Man TT race say that more than 10 teams from around the world have confirmed they will be taking part.

The TTXGP, the world’s first clean emissions motorsport event, takes place at 11am on June 12 before the Senior TT event.

TTXGP organiser Azhar Hussain believes that he will have a strong line-up on the starting grid, with a number of UK and international teams already confirmed.

Speaking last week, he said: ‘We already have more than 10 confirmed participating teams, including teams from the USA and Germany.

‘There is still plenty of time for teams to enter before January 31 and riders to enter before the March 31 closing date for registration.’

He added: ‘Leading UK engineering faculty Kingston University has also confirmed its place. The students were one of the first teams to come on board and have spent the winter months developing their prototype.’

The TTXGP has confirmed that it will be using the same telemetry system as the World Rally Championship. This will allow fans to monitor real-time data online for all the TTXGP machines during the race.

The UK Government has also shown its support for the event at the recent Autosport show at the NEC in Birmingham.

Lord Drayson, the UK Science Minister who chairs a cabinet committee for science and innovation, met the TTXGP team in the clean emissions hall of the show and reiterated the UK Government’s support for the event.

It has contributed to the development of the TTX01, which the team believe is the world’s fastest road-legal electric bike, capable of speeds of up to 120mph. It will be on display at the TT Grandstand on January 31 and February 1.

Tourism and Leisure Minister Martyn Quayle said: ‘The Isle of Man is already seeing the benefits of holding the world’s first TTXGP with the profile that it brings.

‘It is giving us a real chance to put the Island at the forefront of technical development and innovation. There is a real buzz around some of the teams which have confirmed they will take part and this will only grow as we get closer to the race.’

He said he believed the event, which the Manx Government has funded to the tune of £100,000, would complement the TT and would attract extra visitors to the Island.

Mr Quayle praised the organisers and said he would like to see the Island build on the first race, expanding the number of classes in future and perhaps stage it at another time of the year.
