T in the Park chiefs plan to expand festival by another 5,000

FESTIVAL chiefs plan to make T in the Park bigger than ever by selling an extra 5000 tickets.

And organisers Big Day Out want fans allowed access to the site on the Thursday before the 2009 weekend spectacular, in a bid to end congestion woes.

They hope to buck a slump in UK festival ticket sales by increasing capacity beyond 90,000 daily. T has doubled since moving to Balado, by Kinross. And, tomorrow, Perth and Kinross Council will consider another increase.

Big Day Out – who have already sold tens of thousands of tickets, despite no acts being confirmed – also claim early entry will avoid 2007′s parking shambols.

Then, hundreds of motorists struggled to enter the flooded site and gridlocked central Scotland’s roads. Council chief executive Bernadette Malone confirmed: “Big Day Out have sought permission to allow entry to the site on Thursday, July 9, for 5000 more people.

“They considered an additional 5000 camping ticket sales would build on 2008′s successful measures to avoid the 2007 traffic congestion.

“It was considered this would cut down on Friday traffic. The proposed capacity will give a total number of ticketholders of 85,000.

“With artists, guests, media, support staff, sponsors etc, the total attendance during the whole event should not exceed 92,500 a day.

“It is proposed campsite entertainment will discourage excessive numbers from overloading Kinross at night.”
