Salzburg Festival head to step down next September

| December 9, 2008 | 0 Comments More

Austria’s prestigious Salzburg Festival says its theatrical director will step down effective September 2009.

Organizers say next summer’s music festival will be Thomas Oberender’s last. They say Juergen Flimm will take over for the 2010 and 2011 editions of the famed event.

Officials issued a statement Tuesday evening saying only that Oberender was stepping down. But Oberender said afterward that he was leaving because of a creative dispute, and he described his last three seasons as “the most painful time of my life.”

Oberender became theatrical director in October 2006.

Festival officials said they plan to launch a hunt for a permanent replacement next year.
