Glasgow is set to rock with new music festival

| December 19, 2008 | 1 Comment More

GLASGOW has always been at the cutting edge of Scotland’s thriving music scene – now the city is breaking fresh ground again with an exciting new multi-venue festival.

Hinterland debuts in Glasgow on April 30 and May 1 2009, with access to all the concerts and arts events relying on just one ticket.

The innovative new festival, launched to celebrate Glasgow’s UNESCO status as a world centre of music, is the brainchild of Mike Oman and aims to showcase the finest upcoming and established Scottish talent.

Mike is a Glasgow Caledonian alumni and DJ who runs the renowned Hippocampus club night, has spun the decks at the Sub Club and Notting Hill carnival and shared a stage with the likes of Chemical Brothers, Klaxons and Hot Chip.

Around half of all acts performing across 20 art and music venues will be Scottish – with a clutch of the UK’s best talent also thrown in.

The Hinterland Committee, made up of key music personalities and companies from the UK, choose the line-up and 30 acts have already been announced, including Dananananaykroyd, Manda Rin, Isoceles and Zoey Van Goey.

BBC Radio Scotland DJ Jim Gellatly said: “Hinterland sounds like agreat opportunity to spread the word about exciting new bands, and should compliment Glasgow’s status as a UNESCO City Of Music.”

Other panel members include Gigwise – the UK’s leading independent music website – 1965 Records (home to The View and Toddla T), Moshi Moshi records (Kate Nash, Late of the Pier and Hot Chip) and This is Fake DIY – an online magazine, TV station and record label.

Mike said: “Scottish people are driven by art, music and fashion so Glasgow provides the ideal backdrop for a one-ticket multi-venue event.

“This will be the first time an event of this structure and on this scale has been held in Glasgow.

“There will be two days of art and music that allow people to really experience the level of established and underground talent Scotland, and the UK, has to offer.

“The city has a rich heritage and history in the fields of both art and music. At the turn of the century Charles Rennie Mackintosh developed what is now commonly known in the art world as the ‘Glasgow’ style.

“In the world of music the city has also nurtured numerous world-recognised bands and musicians including Simple Minds, Wet Wet Wet, AC/DC’s Angus and Malcolm Young and more recently Glasvegas and Biffy Clyro.”

People buy a ticket that grants them access to any of the venues/events and Hinterland over its two days.
